Richard Slee, Contractor Starts Conservation and Improvement Works

Week beginning Monday 19th October, Richard Slee, our main contractor started working on the Hall.

The first job was to get the floor levels correct as a foundation for the new floor. The main area to move ground materials was the area that was originally under the stage. Richard and his team used a smaller digger and mechanical barrows and moved the removed materials into skips that were taken off site.

When this work was completed a radon sump was fitted into the ground that will sit under the new floor. While this is not an area of radon concern installing the sump now is a sensible approach to ensuring the Hall has reduced any risk to its lowest possible level.

The floor surface then had to be levelled using a mix of concrete and blinding sand. On top of this a damp-proof membrane was laid and this will prevent any rising dampness.

The concrete sub-floor needs to be reinforced with metal messing and this was installed as the last job for the first week.

Well done to Richard Slee and his team for reaching this target.

Heritage Group Investigate the Original Barn Floor

Sunday morning and members of the Heritage Group were at the Hall investigating the original barn floor now that it was exposed. The floor of the barn appeared to have originally being at two levels. To the north side of the door a higher level, probably to unload the corn onto directly from the carts that brought it to the barn. This had been partly dug away when the barn was converted to a Parish Hall and the higher level only existed under the stage area. To the south side of the door the group fund a lower level hard whiter surface which appeared to have been formed using sand and lime mix.

The walls of the barn at lower levels are constructed of stone that appear to sit straight onto an original earth foundations at ground level. No mortar was found in the stonework that was exposed.

Some artefact were discovered including of old animal bones, metal chisel, and small broken glass bottle.

Moving Joists and Rubble

Thursday morning and a community volunteer team back at the Hall. All the joist and old timber was loaded onto the back of a trailer and taken to storage. The old stub walls that had supported the joists were demolished and the rubble loaded onto the back of another trailer and taken off site. This was the last work of the community volunteers in readiness for the contractor to start next Monday. A brilliant job well done. A very impressive team of community volunteers.
